A Child’s Diary: Arnav Kavdia’s Corona Diary

We are encouraging children to write diaries and share with us. We are presenting Arnav Kavdia, a 10-year old boy, who lives in New Jersey. Here are his thoughts (no edits, no filters).

I have to run — and it is 6 miles/ 10 kilometres in 70 minutes. I am practicing everyday.

Hi today I am writing about fitness. 

I have mentioned it a little before but didn’t put much thought in it.

Like I said before I have to run 6 miles/ 10 kilometers in 70 mins. So that is  like 11 mins per mile 7 per kilometer. I have been practicing a lot nowadays and I have made a lot of improvements.  Now I can run 3 miles/ 4.8 kilometers without stopping. 

My dad usually wakes me up at 7:45 and we go for a run in the morning. We come back at 9 and then I start school at 9:30.

I really love running.  

This week was normal. Nothing much happened. But the best thing is that I only have 8 days of school left. YAY!  Well the next time I am writing is on monday so stay tune. And here is the joke of the day: What does a snowman eat for breakfast: Answer Frosty flakes. BYE!!

Guess what? I am so happy to tell you what we did this weekend. We went for a safari. That was a surprise because I had lost hope that anything would open. I am sharing all the pictures from my trip.

Well I am writing about the weekend today. Hope you all ENJOY it.

My dad announced that we were going somewhere special. “ Huh” ? I thought where in the world could we be going in corona times.

When we started on the drive we had all sorts of snacks and stuff. This was kind of weird. When we had almost been driving for 45 mins I saw the symbol for Six Flags Amusement park. This was getting really weird. I thought that all the Parks were closed. 

Then my Dad said “ Ok guys time for the surprise.We are going on a drive through Wildlife Safari” . The second he said I felt so much excitement rushing through my bones that I felt like shouting out with joy and jumping all around.

When we drove into the Entrance there was such a huge line. Then my dad started talking , “Arnav this is the first day the drive thru Safari is opening so there had to be a line.”  

I  WAS SO BORED!! 

When we entered the park it was 12:30 and we had been waiting for 30 mins. “ Gahh” 

Then just as I was about to doze off I saw a sign that said – “ENTRANCE”

That second my dad announced that we were officially entering the Safari. There was a board that said that animals roam freely and do not touch or feed them.

So many signs. The last sign that said Keep windows closed at all times.

NOW the safari really started. When we entered there weren’t many animals at first. Except for some birds we couldn’t see any other animal.

Then there was a sign that said – “Entering Amazing Africa.” I got so excited . 

The First animal we saw was an OSTRICH. I was sooooooooooooooooo happy coz on the trip while we were waiting for entrance, I told my mom I wanted to go to Africa so I could see an ostrich.

If you haven’t seen an ostrich before here is a photo we clicked. It is sooooooooooo tall. 

 When we thought we were gonna see the next animal we saw like 2 more ostriches.  In fact they were all over the place they were running, eating and even fighting. Here is a video of them running. 

Interesting fact about Ostriches: They cannot fly but they can run really fast, and in some places in Africa Ostrich races used to be a sport..

At the corner of my eye I spotted something big. It looked like a bull. Then it hit me “GUYS” !!! I shouted “ LOOK OVER THERE IT’S A BISON” It was humongous.

We were in awe. We got our cameras out and started taking photos, The bison was so close to our car. Our car was practically touching it. Here is a photo we took of the bison.

Interesting fact about Bison: Bison are the largest wild mammal in North America.

This safari was sooooo fun and I am just starting to begin the list.  “ THUMP THUMP THUMP” Whoa am I seeing what I am seeing.

Okay, wait guess the animal.  

30 ft tall, when talks sounds like a trumpet and has ears that are bigger than a baby. Did you guess it? Yea, it is an elephant. It was 7,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,00 times bigger than the bison.

Sadly they were in an enclosure . Well that makes  sense, we don’t want angry elephants stomping on cars. 

One walked over to the end of the fence line. It was so close to us. Everyone stopped to take pictures .  

Interesting fact about Elephants: Their ears are shaped like the continent of Africa.

Suddenly I saw something in the tall grass. It was a zebra! Right in front of the car. 

A question suddenly popped into my mind.  Don’t zebras travel in herds? But this zebra was all lonely eating grass. Ok, I am going off topic but the animals that eat grass have food everywhere. They sleep on food, Run on food, ( This might be disgusting but they even poop on their food!!!)  

Okay going back to topic.  

We started driving again and we saw some animals; they were buffaloes. They were chilling a muddy pool of water. It was like they were sleeping with their eyes open. 

If you don’t believe me here is an image. I am telling you they weren’t moving a muscle.

After we started driving again I saw a flash of balck and white.  And that second a whole herd of Zebra came galloping over. It was so cool. We took so many pics they were amazing here is one of them so you can see how amazing they were.

Interesting Fact about Zebra: They are actually black with white stripes not white with black. They’re amazing right ? 

I started relaxing in my seat and something caught my eye.  There was a horn on top of a hill. That was really weird. Then after we drove around the hill there were 3 rhinoceros. It was so cool looking at their armored body. I was really surprised that they were not in enclosures.  

Interesting fact about Rhino: Rhino horns are the same material as your fingernail

“ hop hop hop” There were a bunch of kangaroos. Most of them were laying down in shade. But some were hopping  over to the side. The ones lying to the side were so chill but the ones that were hoping we’re going everywhere . Here is a photo we took of the ones that were lying down. 

Right ahead we saw a sign that said BEARS.

And there it was a big brown bear standing on its hind legs.. There were so many of them. I also saw the big black bear. 

As we were driving we saw a gigantic board that said “ KINGS LAND” 

When we entered there was a big group of female lions. We all got our cameras out and started clicking.

And then the big attraction, the king of the jungle. ( DRUM ROLL PLEASE) The male lion. The mane was so big, it was amazing.

For some reason all the cars stopped. I peeked out the window to see what the hold up was. Then I saw the huge giraffe licking a car. It was so cool and that car was so lucky, I wish it was our car. But a staff car came along and it  took the giraffe away with some bait. =( 

Interesting fact about Giraffes: They have the same number of neck bones as us, 7

Finally we reached the exit gate. I was so sad that the safari had ended.

Well what did you think ? Did you like it ? Well that was only one part of my weekend here is the second.

My dad said that N.A.S.A. ( National Aeronautics space administration) Is launching a rocket at 3:22 and the time was 3:20 I was thrilled. 

The countdown has begun.  10, 9 , 8 , 7 , 6 , 5 , 4 , 3, 2, 1 BLAST OFF.

The launch was so cool. This was the first time I got to see a live rocket launch.
